The PURPOSE of the Party:
Supporting the more vulnerable in our community by highlighting the amazing work of these three inspiring programs that work at a grassroots level to provide support to those in need.
Ten Yad, which means “helping hand” in Hebrew, is a volunteer-run, Ottawa-based organization dedicated to undertaking acts of Chesed (kindness). They help people in the Jewish community during life-altering situations to ensure those in need find reassurance and comfort with the knowledge they are surrounded by a caring and compassionate community. In this way, Ten Yad works with an individual’s “Circle of Support,” providing kosher meals to alleviate the stress of managing acute situations. Ten Yad has also established a Kosher Pantry program at each of the Ottawa Hospital campuses that ensures access to an assortment of kosher food, specially-designed Shabbat/Yom Tov candles for hospital use and other ritual/religious articles as well as a Bikkur Cholim division (hospital visitations.)
Shalom Bayit is a program of Jewish Family Services (JFS), and the Hebrew name translates into “peace in the home”. Every woman and child should be safe in their own home, as such JFS employs Shalom Bayit counsellors to work with Jewish women in the community who are experiencing abuse including verbal, emotional, physical, financial, and sexual, spiritual/religious abuse, stalking/criminal harassment from a husband, boyfriend, or partner in the past or at present. Shalom Bayit provides support in crisis situations, counselling referrals, safety planning, and discreet follow-up support that includes advocacy assistance.
Keshet for Kids is a program to allow children with special needs to go to summer camp. Tamir is working with the Jewish Ottawa Inclusion Network (JOIN) to promote the inclusion of all children, including those with exceptionalities, to be able to enjoy a Jewish summer camp experience. Tamir is dedicated to assisting people with developmental disabilities to realize their potential in a supportive Jewish environment through opportunities for personal growth and community involvement. Tamir provides a full spectrum of services including housing and support, respite care, and a variety of day services along with a vibrant Judaic outreach program. JOIN is a volunteer-run organization that promotes the inclusion of all children in the Ottawa Jewish Community through workshops for parents and educators, advocacy work, a parent support group and parent-to-parent mentorship.
