The Ottawa Jewish Bulletin is seeking a creative, multi-skilled addition to our community newspaper team.
The candidate for the production and layout designer/ copy editor/ reporter position will have proven skills in newspaper pagination with the additional ability to create, design and lay out ads and copy; edit for style and grammar, write headlines and cutlines. In off-production weeks, the candidate will assist in the news-gathering process and must be able to report on community events and generate compelling news content. In addition, in off-production weeks, this position will assists in designing marketing collateral for the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation.
The candidate will work with the editor, and the business manager, creating a team of three. With such a small group, the candidate must be multi-skilled and willing to wear many hats. In sum, the skill-set required is that of a well-rounded journalist, but with an emphasis on pagination and design.
The Bulletin is a community newspaper that has been serving the Ottawa Jewish Community since 1937. A member of the American Jewish Press Association, the paper is produced 19 times a year. Job Title: Production and layout designer/ copy editor/ reporter
Production and layout designer/ copy editor/ reporter completes all aspects of the production and layout of the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin on the Macintosh platform; helps create and design ads for clients; places copy, assists in editing for style and grammar, assists in writing headlines and cutlines. In off-production weeks, this position will assist in the news-gathering process, reporting on community events and generating compelling news content. In addition, in off-production weeks, this position will assists in designing marketing collateral for the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation.
Duties and Responsibilities
All aspects of the production and layout of the newspaper, including placing ads, copy, photos, writing headlines and copy editing; pulling and editing information for Bulletin’s printed community calendar; sending electronic (pdf) pages to the printer on deadline; creating and uploading pdf “binder” for online Library as well as for Ottawa Jewish Archives; putting paper’s content online with some website maintenance; designing and creating ads for clients and marketing collateral for the Federation and Foundation; reporting in off-production periods.
1. Key Performance Indicators
Candidate should prove him/herself to be a team-player who produces timely and professional newspapers with creative and attractive designs; produces ad and marketing collateral design work that helps build clientele and advertiser satisfaction; writes interesting and compelling articles that give additional value to paper’s content.
Candidate reports to the Communications Manager while working daily with and taking direction and assignments from the Editor.
3. Internal Contacts
Works daily with Editor on copy and with Business Manager on ads and will design creative artwork as necessary for clients. Candidate is a point of contact for Federation and Foundation employees needing help with deadlines.
Reports to Communications Manager on overall details of the Bulletin.
4. External Contacts
Candidate is main contact for the newspaper’s printer, which is currently Performance Printing in Smith Falls. If there is ever a problem with print-quality, the candidate will follow up with printer. Candidate also liaises with some community agencies on deadlines and advertising copy submission.
5. Working Conditions
Production weeks are in the office from Monday to Friday, 9 am- 5pm, with some after-hour and weekend reporting assignments.
Candidate must have ability to work independently, with deadlines while multi-tasking.
6. Summary of Skills/Education/Experience
• Pagination skills – expertise in InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat Pro and demonstrated ability to layout a newspaper or similar publication on a Macintosh platform (MAC OS).
• Graphic design ability with a demonstrated capability in creating appealing visual designs and ads. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite an asset.
• Production knowledge – Ability to place ads, design editorial layouts, track pages, send to printer
• Copy editing skills – Knowledge of Canadian Press Style, excellent grammar, competent and clear headline and cutline writing skills, with a strong attention to detail.
• Competent reporting skills with writing samples that show clear, compelling writing
Experience and education
• Post-secondary education in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is an asset.
• Past newspaper experience is an asset, however, proven and demonstrable skills will be taken into consideration.
• Excellent computer and technical skills; knowledge of WordPress and social media is also an asset.
